What should I avoid while taking Cantret (altretamine)?

• Altretamine can lower the activity of your immune system making you susceptible to infections.
• Avoid contact with people who have colds, the flu, or other contagious illnesses and do not receive vaccines that contain live strains of a virus (e.g., live oral polio vaccine) during treatment with altretamine.
• In addition, avoid contact with individuals who have recently been vaccinated with a live vaccine.
• There is a chance that the virus can be passed on to you.

Other less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Talk to your doctor if you experience:

• Temporary hair loss
• Itching or rash or
• Mild to moderate nausea or vomiting
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect.

Precaution and Warning:

• While you are being treated with altretamine, and after you stop treatment with it, do not have any immunizations (vaccinations) without your doctor's approval. Altretamine may lower your body's resistance and there is a chance you might get the infection the immunization is meant to prevent. In addition, other persons living in your household should not take oral polio vaccine since there is a chance they could pass the polio virus on to you. Also, avoid persons who have taken oral polio vaccine within the last several months.
